Dobrush
Homieĺskaja voblasć, Belarus
Why visit Dobrush?
Dobrush is a small town of about 17,000 on the Ipuć River in the south-east corner of Homieĺskaja voblasć, 25 km east of Gomel and close to the Russian border. The town's claim on travellers is the historic Dobrush Paper Mill — one of the oldest in the former Russian Empire, founded in 1870 by Prince Paskevich on the river that powers it — and the unusual riverside cluster of Tsarist industrial buildings, workers' housing, and the brick Cathedral of St Nicholas that grew up around the mill. The Paskevich-era ensemble gives Dobrush a character distinct from purely Soviet-built industrial towns elsewhere in the region.
Climate is continental; best visited late spring through autumn.

What are the things to do?
Dobrush Paper Mill complex — the late-19th-century brick mill, water-wheels, and adjoining management and workers' housing on the Ipuć — an unusual surviving industrial heritage ensemble; the mill is still active and can be viewed from outside.
Cathedral of St Nicholas — late-19th-century redbrick Orthodox church built for the mill workers.
Dobrush District Museum — strong on the mill, the Paskevich family connection, and regional folk crafts. Around BYN 3.
Ipuć river embankment — pleasant short walks.
Walk the river and the mill ensemble.
Combine with a Gomel day — Dobrush makes a logical afternoon side trip from the Paskevich palace.
Visit the district museum for the industrial-heritage story.
