Lelchytsy

Homieĺskaja voblasć, Belarus

Why visit Lelchytsy?

Lyelchytsy (also spelled Lelchytsy) is an urban-type settlement on the Ubort River in southern Homielskaja voblasć, about 251 km southwest of Gomel, and the administrative center of Lyelchytsy District. Its population is a little over 12,000 as of the mid-2020s. The district, formally established in 1924, sits within the Polesian lowlands, an area of extensive forest and wetland historically associated with mushroom and berry foraging. The town suffered heavily during the Second World War: German forces occupied it from late August 1941, and local Jewish residents were killed in mass executions carried out by German gendarmes and local auxiliary police in 1941–42.
