Khoyniki

Homieĺskaja voblasć, Belarus

Why visit Khoyniki?

Khoyniki is a town in southeastern Homielskaja voblasć and the administrative center of Khoyniki District, one of the areas of Belarus most severely affected by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The town is the administrative seat of the Polesie State Radioecological Reserve, established in 1988 across the Belarusian sector of the exclusion zone, formed from the three most-contaminated districts — Khoyniki, Brahin, and Narowlya. The reserve's scientific base is in the former settlement of Babchin and its experimental base in Vorotets; decades of minimal human presence have since let wildlife recover in the restricted zone, including European bison, elk, brown bear, and white-tailed eagle. Entry to the reserve and exclusion zone is only possible through organised, permitted tours.
