Zangilan

Zangilan is a small town in southern Azerbaijan, serving as the administrative centre of Zəngilan District. It is located on the Voghji (Oxçu) River in the Zangezur Mountains near the Armenian border. The town was historically part of the Zangezur region and was under Armenian control from 1993 until 2020, when it was returned to Azerbaijani control following the Nagorno-Karabakh war. Reconstruction and resettlement efforts are ongoing.

The climate is mild continental with warm summers and cold winters. Spring and autumn are the best visiting seasons.

Zangilan is a town in recovery, with rebuilding underway. It has limited infrastructure but serves as a base for exploring the surrounding Zangezur mountain landscape.

By Plane

The nearest major airport is Nakhchivan International Airport (NAJ), about 130 km north-west. Ganja International Airport (GNJ) is about 220 km north. Travel requires official authorisation.

By Car / Road

Zangilan is reached via the road from Horadiz (about 30 km) or from the north via the Aghdara–Zangilan highway, which was rebuilt after the 2020 war. Official permission is required for travel in border areas.

The town is small and walkable. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for exploring the district.

• Zangilan Mosque – one of the surviving structures in the town, renovated after the town's return to Azerbaijani control.

• Zangezur Mountains – the surrounding mountain landscape is dramatic and largely undeveloped.

• Explore the district – the Zəngilan region has numerous villages and mountain scenery.

• Visit Aghali – 10 km south, a reconstructed smart village built after 2020.

• Photography – the mountain scenery and rebuilding efforts create a unique documentary subject.

Tea and bottled water are available at basic shops.

• Aghali (10 km south, 10 min) – a new "smart village" reconstructed after the war, with modern infrastructure.
• Mincivan (20 km north-west, 25 min) – a village on the Oxçu River in the Zangezur Mountains.
• Horadiz (30 km east, 30 min) – the main town of the neighbouring Fuzuli District.
• Nakhchivan (130 km north-west, 2.5 h) – the exclave capital, reachable via road or air.
