Zəngilan is a rayon in southwestern Azerbaijan, bordering Armenia and Iran, situated in the lowlands and foothills of the Lesser Caucasus. The district has been one of the most strategically significant areas in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts, having been under Armenian control from the early 1990s until its recapture by Azerbaijani forces in October 2020. The administrative center is the city of Zəngilan, which is undergoing extensive reconstruction. The landscape includes the Hakari River valley, agricultural plains, and the foothills rising toward the Armenian highlands.
The district's position along the Azerbaijani-Armenian and Azerbaijani-Iranian borders gives it significant geopolitical importance. The climate is continental with warm summers (28–35°C) and mild winters (2–8°C). Since the 2020 recapture, Zəngilan has been the focus of major reconstruction efforts, including new housing, infrastructure, and the development of the Zangezur corridor. The district's agricultural potential, particularly for vineyards and fruit orchards, is being revived.
Zəngilan offers a unique opportunity to witness post-conflict reconstruction in real time, explore newly accessible landscapes, and understand the geopolitical dynamics of the South Caucasus.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Zəngilan is during spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October), when temperatures are pleasant (18–26°C) and the agricultural landscape is active. Pork is not served; halal dietary practices are standard.
