Xocavənd (Khojavend) is a rayon in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, situated in the foothills and lowlands between Shusha and Agdam. The district is characterized by its agricultural landscape, with irrigated farmland in the lowlands and forested foothills rising toward the mountains. The administrative center is the city of Xocavənd, which has undergone significant changes due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts. The district was under Armenian control from the early 1990s until the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020.
The landscape includes the Tartar River valley, agricultural plains, and the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus. The climate is temperate with warm summers (25–30°C) and mild winters. The district's position between Shusha and Agdam places it along the historic routes connecting the Karabakh lowlands with the mountain fortress cities. Since 2020, reconstruction and resettlement efforts have been underway.
Xocavənd offers opportunities to explore the transitional landscapes between the Karabakh highlands and lowlands, visit reconstructed villages, and understand the region's post-conflict development.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Xocavənd is during spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October), when temperatures are pleasant (18–25°C) and the agricultural landscape is active. Summers are warm (25–30°C) and can be dry. Winters are mild with occasional frost. The district's developing cultural calendar is still being established following the 2020 transition.
