Shamakhi
Şamaxı, Azerbaijan
Why visit Shamakhi?
Shamakhi (also spelled Shemakha, Azerbaijani: Şamaxı) is a historic town in Azerbaijan's Baku Region, capital of the Shamakhi Rayon. One of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the Caucasus, Shamakhi served as the capital of the medieval state of Shirvan and was home to prominent Azerbaijani philosophers, architects, and poets such as Khagani, Nasimi, and Sabir. The town lies in one of the most seismic zones of the Caucasus and has endured devastating earthquakes throughout its history — notably in 1191, 1667 (80,000 fatalities), 1859, and 1902. The 1859 earthquake was so destructive that the capital of the Shirvan governorate was permanently moved to Baku. Despite its turbulent past, Shamakhi retains a rich architectural and cultural heritage, including the oldest mosque in the Caucasus. Summers are warm, winters cool, and the best time to visit is April through October.

What are the things to do?
Juma Mosque (Cümə Məscidi) — Built in 743 by Abu Muslim, this is the oldest mosque in the Caucasus after the Friday Mosque of Derbent. It was damaged repeatedly by earthquakes and wars and was reconstructed most recently in 2009. The white-stone structure with iron domes is a landmark of Islamic architecture in Azerbaijan. No admission fee.
Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum (Qəbirstanlıq) — A cemetery with burial vaults of the Shirvan khans from the 18th–19th centuries. Three of the four surviving mausoleums are accessible. The Azerbaijani poet-satirist Mirza Alakbar Sabir is buried here.

House-Museum of M. Sabir (Əliheydər Qarayev St) — The birthplace of the poet-satirist Mirza Alakbar Sabir (1862), established as a museum in 1998 with 7 exhibition rooms and some 600 exhibits. Open 09:00–18:00.
