Why visit Pirgulu?
Pirgulu is a village in Shamakhi Rayon, central Azerbaijan, located high in the Greater Caucasus foothills at an elevation of about 1,500 m. It is best known for the Pirgulu Astrophysical Observatory, one of Azerbaijan's main astronomical research facilities. The village and its surroundings are covered in dense forest, offering a cool mountain escape from the lowland heat. Winters are cold with snowfall; summer is mild and pleasant. The best time to visit is June to September.

By Plane
Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, about 140 km east, is the nearest major airport. Travel to Shamakhi (1.5–2 hours), then onward to Pirgulu by taxi (40 minutes on a winding mountain road).
By Car / Road
From Shamakhi, head north on an unpaved mountain road for about 25 km. The road climbs steadily through forest and becomes rough in sections; a 4WD is recommended after rain. A taxi from Shamakhi costs 20–30 AZN.
Pirgulu is tiny and walkable. The forest trails around the village are accessible on foot.

Pirgulu Astrophysical Observatory — Azerbaijan's primary astronomical observatory, equipped with telescopes and research facilities. Visits may be possible by arrangement.
Mountain forests — The surrounding beech and oak forests are among the most significant wooded areas in central Azerbaijan.
Panoramic views — From the higher slopes, there are sweeping views of the Shamakhi plain and the Caucasus range.
Forest hiking — Walk the trails through the mountain forests around the observatory.
Stargazing — The clear mountain air and remote location make Pirgulu an excellent spot for night-sky observation.
