Privolnoye

Cəlilabad, Azerbaijan

Why visit Privolnoye?

Privolnoye is a village in the Cəlilabad District of southeastern Azerbaijan, located approximately 30 km southeast of the district capital Jalilabad. Originally settled by Russian Molokan Christians in the 19th century, it retains a distinct cultural heritage that sets it apart from the predominantly Azerbaijani villages around it. The name is Russian for "free" or "spacious". The village lies in a fertile agricultural area where tea, vegetables, and grains are the main crops.

The climate is humid subtropical: hot summers (28–35 °C) and mild winters (3–10 °C), with rainfall distributed throughout the year. The landscape is greener and more lush than the rest of the Cəlilabad district.

What are the things to do?

  • Molokan Heritage — The village's Russian Molokan roots are visible in its architecture: older wooden houses with characteristic verandahs and carved window frames, distinct from standard Azerbaijani stone construction.

  • Tea Plantations — Several hectares of tea bushes surround the village, cultivated since the Soviet era.

  • Privolnoye Church — A small Russian Orthodox chapel, one of the few remaining religious buildings from the Molokan period.

  • Tour the tea fields and, with advance arrangement, observe the tea-processing process at a local farm.

  • Learn about Molokan history — local elders can share stories of the community's 19th-century settlement and survival through the Soviet period.

  • Walk or cycle the country lanes for views of the Talysh foothills in the distance.
