Cəlilabad, Azerbaijan

Why visit Astanli?

Astanli is a village in the Cəlilabad District of southeastern Azerbaijan, located approximately 35 km south of Jalilabad, near the border with Iran. It lies in the forested foothills of the Talysh Mountains, a region known for its lush subtropical vegetation, tea plantations, and the distinctive Talysh culture and language. The village is one of the more remote settlements in the district, surrounded by dense woodland and small farms.

The climate is humid subtropical: warm summers (27–33 °C) and mild winters (3–10 °C), with significant rainfall that sustains the lush forest cover.

What are the things to do?

  • Talysh Forest — The hills around Astanli are covered in dense Caspian forest, a unique ecosystem of ironwood, oak, and hornbeam trees, often draped with moss and lianas.

  • Views of Iran — From higher ground near the village, there are expansive views across the border into Iran's Gilan province.

  • Traditional Talysh Houses — Some older village houses are built in the Talysh style, with wooden upper floors and thatched or corrugated roofs.

  • Hike in the Talysh forests — marked and unmarked trails lead through the woodland, with the chance to spot Caspian wildlife including boar, jackals, and numerous bird species.

  • Visit a local tea farm — the Talysh foothills are some of Azerbaijan's best tea-growing areas; several families produce their own.

  • Experience Talysh culture — the local language (Talysh) is still spoken, and traditional music and cuisine differ from the Azerbaijani mainstream.
