Rouissat

Ouargla, Algeria

Why visit Rouissat?

Rouissat is a town and commune in Ouargla Province, in the Algerian Sahara, immediately adjoining the provincial capital of Ouargla to which it is effectively a southern extension. It sits within the same oasis basin, surrounded by date palmeries, and functions largely as a residential and suburban district of the greater Ouargla urban area.

Like the rest of the region, Rouissat is shaped by oasis agriculture and by the modern economy of the surrounding petroleum province. It is not a standalone tourist destination but part of the continuous settlement that makes up greater Ouargla, sharing its Saharan character, its palm groves, and its desert climate.

The climate is harshly hot in summer, with temperatures frequently above 40°C from June through September, and far more pleasant in the cooler months from November to March, when desert nights can turn cold. Most visitors experience Rouissat as part of a wider visit to Ouargla rather than as a separate trip.

Limited Information available

By Car / Road

Rouissat is reached by road as part of the greater Ouargla area, directly connected to the city centre and to the regional highway network. Intercity buses and shared taxis serving Ouargla also reach this district; overland trips from the northern cities are long.

As a suburb of Ouargla, Rouissat is navigated by taxi and private vehicle, and is connected to the rest of the urban area by local roads. The Ouargla tram and city transport serve the wider conurbation.

What are the things to do?

Rouissat is primarily a residential oasis district and does not have a roster of distinct tourist monuments of its own. Its appeal lies in the surrounding palmeries and proximity to the historic sights of central Ouargla, including the ksar and the Saharan Museum.

Walking among the date palmeries that surround the oasis is the main local pastime, and the historic attractions of central Ouargla are within easy reach for day visits.
