El Borma
Ouargla, Algeria
Why visit El Borma?
El Borma is a remote settlement and commune in the far southeast of Ouargla Province, deep in the Algerian Sahara near the border with Tunisia. It exists primarily because of the oil industry: El Borma is the site of a long-producing oil field, and the settlement is essentially a company town serving the surrounding hydrocarbon operations rather than a conventional civilian community.
This is one of the most isolated inhabited places in the region, set in open desert far from the populated oasis belt around Ouargla city. Its population is small and tied to the energy sector, and access is dominated by industry logistics. El Borma is not a tourist destination in any usual sense — it is an oil outpost in a vast, empty stretch of the Sahara.
The climate is extreme: scorching summers with daytime temperatures well above 40°C from June through September, and cooler but still warm winters from November to March, when desert nights can be cold. The remoteness and the industrial nature of the place mean independent travel here is impractical for most visitors.
