Ain Beida
Ouargla, Algeria
Why visit Ain Beida?
Aïn Beïda is a locality in Ouargla Province in the Algerian Sahara, lying just southeast of the provincial capital, Ouargla. (It should not be confused with the larger, separate city of Aïn Beïda in Oum el Bouaghi Province in north-eastern Algeria — this entry covers only the place in the Ouargla oasis area.) The name, meaning roughly "the white spring," is shared by a number of places across the country.
Within Ouargla Province, Aïn Beïda is best known for lending its name to the area around the city's airport — Ain Beida Airport (IATA: OGX), which sits about 8 km southeast of central Ouargla. It is a small settlement on the edge of the oasis, part of the continuous fabric of the greater Ouargla area rather than a distinct tourist destination.
The climate is the desert's: extremely hot in summer, with daytime temperatures frequently above 40°C from June to September, and far more comfortable in the cooler months from November to March, when nights can turn cold. Winter is the best time to be in the region.
