N'Goussa

Ouargla, Algeria

Why visit N'Goussa?

N'Goussa is an oasis town and commune in Ouargla Province in the Algerian Sahara, lying a short distance north of the provincial capital, Ouargla. It is a traditional palmery settlement, its life centred on date cultivation in the groves that surround it, and it forms part of the cluster of oases in the Ouargla basin.

The town has a long-standing oasis character, with palm gardens and a settled agricultural community typical of the eastern Algerian Sahara. It is not a major tourist destination in its own right but rather a quiet oasis community that travellers may pass through or visit as a side trip from Ouargla.

The climate is the desert's: extremely hot summers, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C from June to September, and far milder conditions in the cooler half of the year, from November to March, when nights can be cold. The most comfortable time to visit is winter.

What are the things to do?

The principal sight is the oasis itself — the date palmeries and the traditional settlement. N'Goussa preserves the character of an old Saharan oasis town.

Walking among the palm groves and experiencing the rhythm of a traditional oasis community is the main draw. The historic sights of central Ouargla, including the ksar, are an easy excursion away.
