Raydah

‘Amrān, Yemen

Why visit Raydah?

Raydah (also spelled Raydah) is a town in 'Amran Governorate, northern Yemen, located in the highlands north of Sana'a. It is best known for its historic old city, which features well-preserved traditional Yemeni architecture — multi-storey tower houses built from local stone and decorated with white gypsum trim. Raydah was an important centre of learning and trade in the medieval period and retains a relaxed, traditional atmosphere. The surrounding countryside is agricultural, with terraced fields growing sorghum, wheat, and coffee. The climate is mild year-round, with the best visiting conditions from October to March.

What are the things to do?

  • Old City of Raydah — a maze of narrow alleyways lined with traditional stone tower houses, some dating back 300–400 years. The architecture features decorative window arches and carved wooden doors.

  • Raydah Mosque — an old mosque with a plain square minaret, typical of the highland style.

  • Weekly souq — held on Mondays, the market draws farmers from across the region selling livestock, grain, and local crafts.

  • Surrounding terraced fields — the agricultural landscape around Raydah is picturesque, with stone terraces following the contours of the hills.

  • Walking tour of the old city — wander the alleyways and observe daily life in a traditional Yemeni highland town.

  • Photography — the old city's architecture and the surrounding mountain scenery are excellent subjects.

  • Visit local farms — with a guide, visit coffee or sorghum farms on the terraced hillsides.
