Houth

Houth is a town and the administrative centre of Houth District in 'Amran Governorate, northern Yemen. It lies in the highlands northwest of 'Amran town, in a region of rugged mountains and deep valleys. The area is predominantly agricultural, with terraced hillsides growing sorghum, qat, and fruit orchards. Houth was historically a significant local centre and lends its name to the Houthi movement, which originated in this region in the 1990s. The town retains a traditional character, with stone houses clustered around a small market. The climate is temperate; best visited from October to April.

By Plane

Sana'a International Airport (SAH) is the nearest major airport, about 140 km southeast. From Sana'a, travel via 'Amran and then north-west to Houth. Journey time is 3–4 hours.

By Train

No railway in Yemen.

By Car / Road

Houth is accessible by road from 'Amran (60 km northwest, 1.5 hours on winding mountain roads). A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the final approach. From Sana'a, the total distance is about 140 km and takes 3–4 hours. Shared taxis are irregular; private transport is preferable.

Houth is small and walkable. For exploring the surrounding valleys, a 4WD with a local driver is essential.

A few simple restaurants serve rice, grilled meat, and bread. Options are very basic.

Tea is available at market stalls. Bottled water is advisable but may need to be brought from 'Amran.

The small local market sells basic provisions. There is no tourist-oriented commerce.
