About Shaharah
Shaharah is a historic mountain village in 'Amran Governorate, Yemen, famed for the Shaharah Bridge — a remarkable stone arch bridge that spans a deep gorge between two mountain peaks. Built in the 17th century, the bridge is a masterpiece of Yemeni engineering and one of the country's most iconic landmarks. The village sits at an elevation of over 2,600 m, offering breathtaking views across the surrounding highlands. The cool mountain climate makes it a refreshing escape from Yemen's lowland heat. The best time to visit is between October and April, when temperatures are mild and skies are clear.

Things to do
Shaharah Bridge (Jisr Shaharah) — the star attraction: a single-span stone bridge built in the 17th century, suspended over a 200 m deep gorge. It was designed to be defensible — removable stones at each end could turn it into a drawbridge. Free to walk across.
Mountain-top views — from the village and bridge, panoramic vistas of the Haraz Mountains stretch to the horizon. Sunrise and sunset are particularly spectacular.
Traditional stone houses — Shaharah's multi-storey stone tower houses are built into the mountainside, their small windows and thick walls characteristic of highland Yemeni architecture.
Ancient cisterns — scattered around the village are old rainwater collection cisterns, some believed to be pre-Islamic in origin.
Photography — the Shaharah Bridge and surrounding landscape offer some of Yemen's most photogenic views.
Hiking — trails lead from Shaharah to neighbouring mountain villages. A local guide is advisable.
Visit a qat chew — if invited, afternoon qat sessions are a central social ritual in Yemeni highland culture.
