Quan Ba

Hà Giang, Viet Nam

Why visit Quan Ba?

Quan Ba is a district town in Ha Giang province, lying at the foot of the Quan Ba Pass (Heaven's Gate) — the dramatic mountain pass that marks the entrance to the Dong Van Karst Plateau. It is the first major stop north of Ha Giang city on the Ha Giang Loop, sitting at an elevation of approximately 1,500 m. The area is known for its twin limestone hills — the Fairy Bosom (Co Tien) — which rise from the valley floor like a pair of symmetrical breasts, and for its terraced rice fields that cascade down the mountainsides.

The population is a mix of Hmong, Dao, and Tay ethnic groups. The climate is temperate, with cool winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is during the rice harvest season (September-October) when the terraces turn golden, or in spring (March-April) when peach and plum blossoms cover the hillsides.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, approximately 300 km south. From Hanoi, take a bus to Ha Giang city, then continue by minibus or motorbike.

By Car / Road

Quan Ba lies on National Route 4C, about 30 km north of Ha Giang city (40-50 minutes by motorbike or car). The road climbs steeply through the Quan Ba Pass, with switchbacks and panoramic viewpoints. Buses from Ha Giang city to Dong Van pass through Quan Ba. A border-area permit is required for travel north of Ha Giang city.

The town centre is small and walkable. A motorbike is the best way to explore the surrounding valley, villages, and waterfalls. Road conditions are generally good on QL4C but become rougher on side roads to rural hamlets.

What are the things to do?

Quan Ba Pass (Heaven's Gate) — At 1,945 m elevation, this mountain pass offers sweeping views over the valley of unending terraced fields. The viewpoint is one of the most photographed spots on the Ha Giang Loop.

Fairy Bosom (Co Tien) — Two symmetrical hills in the valley below Heaven's Gate, said to resemble a woman's breasts. A small bra-shaped trellis has been planted on the hills by locals.

Lung Khuy Cave (Dragon Rock Cave) — A large karst cavern near Quan Ba with impressive stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone, and drapery. A non-slip footpath with handrails has been installed. Admission is cash-only, 30-minute hike from the parking lot.

Trek through the rice terraces — Guided walks through Hmong and Dao villages in the valley below Heaven's Gate.

Visit the local market — Quan Ba's market is smaller and less touristy than Dong Van's, offering a genuine glimpse of daily ethnic minority trade.
