Xin Man
Hà Giang, Viet Nam
About Xin Man
Xin Man is a district in northwestern Ha Giang province, bordering Lao Cai province to the west and China to the north. It is the most remote district in Ha Giang, lying off the main Ha Giang Loop circuit, and consequently receives very few tourists. The landscape is defined by steep hillsides carved into rice terraces, dense forests, and the upper reaches of the Chay River.
The district capital is Coc Pai, a small town on the Chay River. The name Xin Man comes from the Hmong language. The population is predominantly Hmong and Dao, with smaller communities of Nung and Tay. The climate is subtropical with heavy rainfall from May to September. The best time to visit is from September to November (harvest season) or March to April (spring).

By Train
By Car / Road
Xin Man is accessible via Provincial Road 178 from Hoang Su Phi (40 km north) or from Bac Ha in Lao Cai province (50 km west). The roads are winding, narrow, and often in poor condition, especially after rain. Public transport is minimal — most visitors arrive by motorbike or private car. No border-area permit is required for Xin Man itself, though check current regulations near the Chinese border.
Coc Pai town is very small and walkable. A sturdy motorbike is the only practical way to reach the surrounding communes, terrace viewpoints, and riverside villages. Road conditions vary from sealed to gravel, with some sections requiring careful navigation.
Things to do
Rice Terraces — Xin Man's terraced rice fields rival those of Hoang Su Phi in beauty, but with far fewer visitors. The best views are along the road between Coc Pai and the villages of Nan Ma, Ta Nhiu, and Trung Son.
Chay River Valley — The upper Chay River has carved a scenic valley through limestone hills, with opportunities for riverside walks and photography.
Tea Hills — Xin Man has high-elevation Shan Tuyet tea plantations, with some trees estimated to be 200-300 years old.
Trekking through Hmong and Dao villages — The remoteness of Xin Man means village visits are genuinely off-the-beaten-path experiences. Homestay trekking can be arranged through local guides.
Photography — The combination of terraced rice, tea plantations, and forested hills makes Xin Man a rewarding destination for landscape photography.
