Muong Ang
Điện Biên, Viet Nam
Why visit Muong Ang?
Muong Ang (Mường Ảng) is a district in south-eastern Điện Biên Province, roughly midway between Điện Biên Phủ and Sơn La. The district centre is a small town dominated by the Muong Ang Thermal Power Plant (the largest in the region, fuelled by local coal deposits), which gives the area an industrial character unusual in northwestern Vietnam. The surrounding countryside is hilly and agricultural, with Thai and H'Mông villages farming rice, sugarcane, and coffee. The climate is typical of the region: dry and cool November–March, hot and wet April–October.

Several roadside quán cơm (rice shops) serve simple Vietnamese meals for 20,000–40,000 dong. The town's proximity to the power plant means there are more dining options than a town of its size would normally warrant — look for bún cá (fish noodle soup) and grilled meats.
Where to drink?
Small coffee shops along the main road serve Vietnamese coffee and fruit juices. Bottled water is widely available.
