Nam Po

Điện Biên, Viet Nam

Why visit Nam Po?

Nam Po (Nậm Pồ) is the newest district of Điện Biên Province, created in 2012 from the southern portion of Mường Nhé District. It is a remote, heavily forested area bordering Laos, with a population composed predominantly of H'Mông, Thai, and Khơ Mú ethnic minorities. The district centre, Thị trấn Nậm Pồ, is a small settlement with very basic infrastructure. The landscape is mountainous, covered with primary and secondary tropical forest drained by the Nậm Pồ River (a tributary of the Da River). Nam Po sees virtually no tourism. The climate is subtropical monsoon with a distinct dry season (November–March) and a wet season (April–October).

By Plane

Nearest airport is Điện Biên Phủ Airport (DIN IATA), about 120 km south-east. Travel time by road is 3–4 hr.

By Car / Road

Provincial roads connect Nam Po to Mường Lay (40 km south, 1.5 hr) and Mường Nhé (30 km north, 1 hr). Access is via Route 127 then local roads. Public buses are extremely rare; a private vehicle is strongly recommended. The road quality deteriorates rapidly in the rainy season.

What are the things to do?

  • Nậm Pồ River valley — The river cuts through the forested mountains, forming small rapids and pools popular with local picnickers in the dry season.
  • Ethnic minority villages — Traditional H'Mông and Thai stilt-house settlements in the surrounding valleys. The area is off the tourist radar entirely; visitors are a rarity.

Trekking through the forest to remote villages and along the Nậm Pồ River. A guide who speaks the local language (H'Mông or Thai) is essential — find one through the district people's committee. Birdwatching and wildlife photography.
