Tuan Giao
Điện Biên, Viet Nam
Why visit Tuan Giao?
Tuan Giao (Tuần Giáo) is a district in eastern Điện Biên Province, strategically located at the junction of National Route 279 and the road to Lai Châu. The district centre is a roadside town that serves as a stopover for travellers crossing the Pha Đin Pass between Điện Biên Phủ and Sơn La. The area is predominantly H'Mông and Thai, with terraced rice cultivation on the steep valley slopes. Tuan Giao is historically significant as the site of an early Việt Minh victory against French forces in 1953, a prelude to the larger Battle of Điện Biên Phủ. The climate is tropical monsoon; November–March is cool and dry, while the rest of the year is hot and wet.

What are the things to do?
- Pha Đin Pass (Đèo Pha Đin) — One of the most famous mountain passes in northwestern Vietnam, reaching 1,200 m elevation on the border with Sơn La. The pass offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The road winds through dense forest with sheer drops. Allow 45 min–1 hr to drive the 32 km pass.
- Tuan Giao market — The Sunday market is the weekly gathering point for H'Mông and Thai villagers from surrounding communes, selling livestock, textiles, and local produce.
- Battle of Tuan Giao memorial — A small monument near the town centre commemorates the Việt Minh victory of December 1953.
Drive or motorbike the Pha Đin Pass, stopping at the summit viewpoint (there is a small parking area). The pass is also excellent for cycling if you are fit and comfortable with narrow roads. Visit the Sunday market for a glimpse of local hill-tribe life.
