Tua Chua

Điện Biên, Viet Nam

Why visit Tua Chua?

Tua Chua (Tủa Chùa) is a highland district in eastern Điện Biên Province, bordering Lai Châu Province to the north. The district capital sits at an elevation of over 1,000 m on a plateau of the Điện Biên–Lai Châu massif, giving it a noticeably cooler climate than the Điện Biên valley. The area is characterised by dramatic limestone karst formations, deep gorges, and terraced rice fields. The majority of the population is H'Mông, with Thai and Dao minorities also present. Tua Chua is known for Tủa Chùa Cave (hang Tủa Chùa), a striking limestone cave system that is the district's main draw. The dry season (November–March) is the best time to visit; the rainy season (April–October) can make roads difficult.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Nearest airport is Điện Biên Phủ Airport (DIN IATA), about 100 km south-west. By road the journey takes 3 hr.

By Car / Road

Provincial Route 134 connects Tua Chua to Điện Biên Phủ (100 km, 3 hr) and to Tuần Giáo (40 km south). Buses from Điện Biên Phủ's bus station run to Tua Chua but services are limited — one or two departures daily. The road climbs steeply with switchbacks; travel time is longer than the distance suggests.

The district centre is compact and walkable. For reaching the cave and outlying villages, a hired motorbike or xe ôm is necessary. The cave is about 8 km from town.

What are the things to do?

  • Tủa Chùa Cave (Hang Tủa Chùa) — A large limestone cave with impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations, about 8 km from the district centre. The cave has been fitted with basic electric lighting. Entry is free but bring a torch for the deeper chambers.
  • Limestone karst landscape — The approaches to Tua Chua are lined with jagged karst pinnacles and outcrops that make for excellent scenery, especially in the early morning light.
  • H'Mông villages — Traditional wooden houses with packed-earth floors clustered on the hillsides. The Sunday market in the district centre draws villagers from the surrounding communes.

Explore Tủa Chùa Cave with a local guide (hire one at the cave entrance). Trekking circuits through the karst landscape and H'Mông villages offer good birdwatching and photography, especially during the rice harvest (September–October) when the terraces are golden.
