Muong Lay

Điện Biên, Viet Nam

Why visit Muong Lay?

Muong Lay (Mường Lay) is a small town in northwestern Điện Biên Province, situated on the Black River (Sông Đà) in a valley surrounded by limestone karsts and forested hills. Formerly the capital of the old Lai Châu Province before the administrative reorganisation, Muong Lay was partly relocated in the 1990s when the Sơn La Hydropower Dam reservoir flooded the original town centre. The new town was rebuilt on higher ground and today serves as a minor transport stop on National Route 12 between Lai Châu and Điện Biên Phủ. The area is home to Thai, H'Mông, and Dao ethnic minorities. The climate is tropical monsoon; November–March is cool and dry, while May–October is hot and wet.

What are the things to do?

  • Black River view — The wide reservoir of the Sơn La Dam has turned the Black River into a lake dotted with limestone islets; the view from the town's high streets is striking at sunrise.
  • Local market — A morning market sells hill-tribe textiles, forest produce, and fresh vegetables. Most animated on Sunday mornings.

Take a boat trip on the Black River reservoir, hiring a local boat operator for a cruise past the karst outcrops. The surrounding hills offer short trekking routes through Thai and H'Mông villages where homestays can sometimes be arranged.
