Lawton
Oklahoma, United States
Why visit Lawton?
Lawton is the largest city in southwestern Oklahoma, with a population of approximately 93,000. Located in the Great Plains Country region, it serves as the county seat of Comanche County and is adjacent to Fort Sill, a U.S. Army installation established in 1869 during the Indian Wars. The city was founded in 1901 during the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache land opening.
Lawton's identity is closely tied to Fort Sill, which remains an active military base and the home of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School. The city offers a blend of military community life, Native American heritage, and outdoor recreation opportunities. The nearby Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge provides access to some of Oklahoma's most dramatic landscapes.
Climate is semi-arid continental with hot summers (average highs around 97°F / 36°C) and cold winters (average highs around 50°F / 10°C). Spring is the most severe weather season, with tornadoes possible. Fall is the most pleasant time to visit, with mild temperatures and clear skies.
