Why visit Shawnee?
Shawnee is a city in the Frontier Country region of central Oklahoma, with a population of approximately 30,000. Located about 35 miles (56 km) east of Oklahoma City along Interstate 40, it is the county seat of Pottawatomie County. Shawnee was established as a railroad hub in the late 19th century and has a rich history tied to both Native American heritage and the Oklahoma land runs.
The city is known for its numerous Native American casinos, which have become major economic drivers. Shawnee is also the hometown of Brad Pitt and Jim Thorpe (the legendary athlete), and is the birthplace of the Sonic Drive-In restaurant chain. The historic Bell Street district features revitalized architecture from the city's early years.
Shawnee is home to Oklahoma Baptist University and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation's cultural heritage center. While normally not on the tourist itinerary of those unfamiliar with the area, Shawnee can prove to be an interesting day trip from Oklahoma City.
Climate is humid subtcontinental with hot summers and mild winters. Spring brings the possibility of severe weather. Fall is the most pleasant season for visiting.
