Why visit Muskogee?
Muskogee is a city in the Green Country region of eastern Oklahoma, with a population of approximately 37,000. The city is the county seat of Muskogee County and has a rich history tied to Native American governance. In the 1830s, following Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act, the area became a center of government for the "Five Civilized Tribes" at a place called The Indian Agency.
Muskogee gained national recognition through Merle Haggard's 1969 hit song "Okie From Muskogee," which became an anthem of working-class American pride. The city features several notable museums reflecting its Native American heritage, military history, and musical legacy. Despite challenges with poverty and crime, Muskogee maintains a strong sense of community and cultural identity.
Climate is humid subtropical with hot summers (average highs around 93°F / 34°C) and cold winters (average highs around 48°F / 9°C). Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons for outdoor activities.
