Biddeford
Maine, United States
Why visit Biddeford?
Biddeford is a city in southern Maine's Southern Coast region, located along the Saco River and the Atlantic Ocean. Once a booming textile mill town, Biddeford has transformed its historic mills into modern mixed-use spaces while retaining its Franco-American heritage. Approximately 33% of the population speaks French, a legacy of French-Canadian immigrants who came to work in the city's mills during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, the city is experiencing a renaissance with new restaurants, shops, and cultural venues opening in its revitalized downtown.
The city experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant with temperatures in the 70s-80s°F, ideal for enjoying the nearby beaches. Winters bring cold temperatures and occasional snow, though the coastal location moderates the severity. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, and spring brings blooming gardens and warming temperatures.
Biddeford sits just north of Saco and Old Orchard Beach, and about 15 miles south of Portland. The city offers a more authentic, less touristy alternative to its neighbors, with a growing food scene and easy access to Maine's southern beaches. The Biddeford Pool area provides scenic coastal views and tidal pools for exploration.
