Uluborlu

Isparta, Turkey

Why visit Uluborlu?

Uluborlu is a town in western Isparta Province, set in a mountain valley, and identified with the ancient city of Sozopolis (also known as Apollonia). Founded in antiquity, it passed through Phrygian, Hellenistic (Seleucid and Attalid), and Roman hands before becoming part of the Byzantine Empire, then changing hands repeatedly between the Byzantines and Seljuk Turks after 1074. Timur's forces later destroyed the settlement during their sweep through Anatolia. The town's hilltop castle — originally Roman, rebuilt in the Byzantine period using reused Roman material and later repaired by the Seljuks and the Hamidid beylik — survives as a ruin above the modern town.
