Coast

Coast Region (Pwani) stretches along the Indian Ocean north and south of Dar es Salaam. It includes the historic port of Bagamoyo, the Saadani National Park (Tanzania's only beachside park), the ferry town of Kilindoni on Mafia Island, and quiet fishing villages along the coast.

The best time to visit Coast Region is during the long dry season from June to October, when temperatures are warm but not oppressive (25–30°C), humidity drops, and beaches at Bagamoyo and Mafia Island are at their most pleasant — this is also peak season for Saadani National Park as vegetation thins and wildlife concentrates near water. A shorter shoulder window in November and December brings lighter, intermittent "short rains" (vuli) that rarely disrupt plans, with fewer visitors and lower lodge rates. The off-season runs from March through May during the heavy rains (masika), when downpours can last hours, roads get muddy, and some coastal lodges close; it is the cheapest time to visit but the least comfortable. January through March is hot and humid (33°C+) with building humidity before the rains — tolerable for diving around Mafia Island, where underwater visibility peaks in the dry-to-hot transition months, but uncomfortably muggy for beach lounging. If planning around local culture, time a trip to Bagamoyo for the Sauti za Busara music festival in Zanzibar (February) or the Bagamoyo Arts Festival, both within easy reach of the Coast Region coast.
