Saadani National Park
Coast, Tanzania
Why visit Saadani National Park?
Saadani National Park is Tanzania's only wildlife reserve bordering the Indian Ocean, covering 1,100 km² of coastal bush, riverine forest, and beach in the northern part of Coast Region. It was established as a game reserve in the 1960s and upgraded to a national park in 2005. The park uniquely combines East African safari wildlife with a tropical beach setting.
The Wami River forms the park's southern boundary and attracts a mix of freshwater and marine species. Wildlife includes elephant, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, lion, and hippo, alongside palm-fringed beaches where sea turtles nest. The park also hosts over 300 bird species.
Saadani offers a less crowded alternative to the northern safari circuit, combining game drives with beach relaxation. The best time for wildlife viewing is the dry season from June to October.
