Waterloo is a town in the Western Area of Sierra Leone, located on the eastern edge of the Freetown Peninsula. It is a commuter settlement for people working in Freetown and a transport hub on the highway connecting the capital to the rest of the country. The town was historically a settlement for liberated African slaves.

The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from May to November. The dry season from December to April offers the best conditions for travel.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest international airport is Lungi International Airport (IATA: FNA), approximately 40 km northwest across the estuary. Access to Waterloo is by road via the Freetown bypass.

By Car / Road

Waterloo is on the main highway from Freetown to Bo and the southern/eastern provinces, about 30–45 minutes east of the capital. Poda podas and shared taxis run frequently from Freetown.

Waterloo is compact. Motorcycle taxis and poda podas are the main forms of local transport.
