Tivaouane
Thiès, Senegal
Why visit Tivaouane?
Tivaouane is the holy city of the Senegalese Tijaniyya, the country's largest Sufi brotherhood, located about 100 km northeast of Dakar in the Thiès region, with a base population of roughly 100,000. In 1902, El Hadj Malick Sy (1855–1922) chose Tivaouane as his residence and transformed it from a colonial station into the Tijaniyya's religious center, initiating the annual celebration of Mawlid — known locally as the Gamou — marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. The Gamou has since grown into one of Senegal's largest religious gatherings: on its main night the city's population can swell to several million as Tijaniyya disciples arrive from across Senegal and abroad.
