Aleksandrov

Vladimirskaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Aleksandrov?

Aleksandrov is a historic city approximately 80 km north of Vladimir, known primarily for the Aleksandrova Sloboda — a 16th-century royal residence that served as the seat of Ivan the Terrible's feared Oprichnina. Founded in the 16th century and named after Tsar Alexander (Ivan IV's pre-monastic name), the city played a dramatic role in one of Russia's most turbulent periods of history.

The city sits on gently rolling terrain at the edge of the Meshchera lowlands, surrounded by mixed forests and small rivers. Aleksandrov has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, similar to the rest of Vladimir Oblast. The historic centre is compact, with the Aleksandrova Sloboda complex dominating the skyline.

Today Aleksandrov is a quiet industrial town with a population of around 55,000. The Aleksandrova Sloboda is the main attraction, drawing visitors interested in medieval Russian history and Ivan the Terrible's reign. The town also serves as a convenient stopping point on the Moscow–Vladimir route.
