Bogolyubovo
Vladimirskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Bogolyubovo?
Bogolyubovo (Боголюбово) is a village in Vladimir Oblast, 3 km east from Vladimir. Bogolyubovo is a generally recognized part of the Golden Ring and preserves finest white-stone monuments from the 12th century. Founded by Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky in 1158, the village sits on the high bank of the River Nerl, several kilometers away from its confluence with the Klyazma.
The Moscow–Nizhny Novgorod railway line passes at the foot of the hill, south of the village. Behind the railway line there is a water-meadow with the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl. The old road from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod goes through the village, parallel to the railway.
Bogolyubovo's main attraction is the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, probably the most harmonious and complete church in Russian architecture. Both the shape, the exterior decoration, and the location are perfect. The church stands in the field on a small hill near the Nerl river, approached on foot across a stone-paved road through the meadow — a pilgrimage-like experience.

By Plane
The nearest airports are in Moscow (Sheremetyevo SVO, Domodedovo DME, Vnukovo VKO), approximately 190 km south. Most visitors travel via Vladimir.
By Train
Local trains from Vladimir in the direction of Nizhny Novgorod (towards Kovrov, Vyazniki, or Gorokhovets) run 8 times per day. The schedule has a gap between 08:30 and 15:30, so it's generally advisable to take a bus instead.
By Car / Road
From Vladimir, head east towards Nizhny Novgorod. Bogolyubovo should be the first settlement on your way (before the old road joins the M7 highway). Parking is limited near the convent (free) or use the toll parking near the railway station.
Bogolyubovo is tiny and can be explored entirely on foot. Vladimir city buses #103 and 152 run through Bogolyubovo — take these from any bus stop in Vladimir's historical centre (e.g., near the Golden Gate or Cathedral Square). The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl is a 15-minute walk from the train station through the meadow — driving to the church is impossible.
What are the things to do?
Religious Buildings:
- Church of the Intercession on the Nerl — Probably the most harmonious and complete church in Russian architecture. The church stands in the field on a small hill near the Nerl river, close to its confluence with the Klyazma. One approaches by foot on a unique stone-paved road through the meadow. In spring, high water cuts the church off providing a breathtaking view. Walk 15 minutes from the Bogolyubovo train station, crossing the railway tracks and heading south. Interior is quite average; the exterior is the masterpiece.
- Bogolyubovo Convent — Founded in the 13th century, most buildings are more recent (19th-century baroque-to-Russian-revival). The major monument is the remaining part of Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky's 12th-century palace — the Staircase Tower and adjoining gallery, now incorporated into the 18th-century Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin. These fragments are believed to trace back to the 12th century and are considered the only monument of ancient secular civilian architecture in Russia.
- Cathedral of the Bogolyubovo Icon of Our Lady — 1855–65, Russian-revival style, the most impressive building of the convent.
- Church of St. Jehoiakim and St. Anna — ul. Lenina, 48. Mid-19th-century classicism church, renovated after Soviet-period damage.
Walk through the meadow to the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl for an unforgettable experience. Swim in the Nerl or Klyazma rivers — there are nice sand beaches close to the church. For other activities, go to Vladimir (3 km away).
