Why visit Gus-Khrustalny?

Gus-Khrustalny (literally "Crystal Goose") is a town in Vladimir Oblast approximately 60 km southwest of Vladimir, famous as the historic centre of Russian crystal glassmaking. The town grew up around glassworks founded in the 18th century and became one of the most important centres of crystal production in the Russian Empire. The name comes from the town's specialisation in crystal (khrustal) production.

The town sits in a gently rolling landscape of mixed forests and small rivers. Gus-Khrustalny has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The historic centre features 19th-century industrial architecture, workers' housing, and the impressive Crystal Museum housed in a former factory building.

Today Gus-Khrustalny remains an active centre of glass and crystal production, though the industry has declined from its peak. The town offers visitors a unique insight into Russia's industrial heritage and the art of crystal making.
