Why visit Gorokhovets?

Gorokhovets is a quiet, atmospheric Golden Ring town on the left bank of the Klyazma River, approximately 65 km east of Vladimir. First mentioned in chronicles in 1148, the town grew up as a trading post on the river route between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. Gorokhovets is known for its well-preserved 17th-century merchant houses and hilltop churches, which give it a distinctive and unspoiled character.

The town sits on a steep bank of the Klyazma River, with the historic centre perched on the hilltop and the lower town along the river. Gorokhovets has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The town has a population of around 13,000 and retains a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere that contrasts with the more touristed Golden Ring towns.

Gorokhovets was granted town status in 1778 and prospered as a trading centre in the 18th and 19th centuries. The merchant houses from this period are the town's main architectural attraction, with ornate facades and carved wooden details.
