Kirzhach

Vladimirskaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Kirzhach?

Kirzhach is a small town in the northwestern part of Vladimir Oblast, approximately 37 km northeast of Aleksandrov. The town sits on the banks of the Kirzhach River, a left tributary of the Klyazma, surrounded mainly by forests. Kirzhach is known since the 14th century, with the town's foundation linked to the Kirzhach Monastery established by Sergius of Radonezh in 1354–1358.

The town has a simple rectangular layout, with the Kirzhach River flowing from north to south and dividing it into two parts. The historical centre and the Annunciation Convent are in the eastern part, while the western part is more residential. The railway runs along the western boundary. Kirzhach has a population of approximately 32,000 and a continental climate typical of central Russia.

While Kirzhach does not rank among the primary attractions of Vladimir Oblast, it has its own charm with its medieval convent, several historic churches, and peaceful surroundings. The town makes for an interesting stop on a tour of the region's lesser-known Golden Ring towns.
