Aykhal

Aykhal is a diamond-mining town of roughly 10,000 people in the northern Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), operated primarily by ALROSA. The town was established in 1960 to serve the Aikhal kimberlite pipe and has grown into a significant northern logistics hub. Aykhal sits on the Taimyr Plateau at approximately 2,000 metres elevation, with a subarctic climate featuring long, severe winters and short, cool summers.

The town serves as a processing and administrative centre for ALROSA's northern diamond operations, including the nearby Udachny and Jubilee mines. ALROSA provides much of the town's infrastructure, including housing, schools, and transport.

For travellers, Aykhal provides insight into the scale and logistics of Arctic diamond mining. The town is one of the most northerly industrial settlements in Yakutia and offers a window into life above the Arctic Circle.

By air

Aykhal's airfield receives flights from Yakutsk (roughly 1,400 km north). Services are primarily for ALROSA operations, but commercial bookings may be possible.

By road

A seasonal winter road connects Aykhal to Udachny and onward to Yakutsk. Summer access is by air only.

The town is easy to cover on foot. ALROSA operates internal transport services.

The ALROSA visitor centre and mine-viewing areas offer guided tours. The surrounding tundra landscape is accessible in summer. The town's Soviet-era northern architecture is notable.
