Why visit Neryungri?
Neryungri is a city of roughly 60,000 people in the southern part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), situated at the junction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) railway and the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline (AYaM). Founded in 1975 during the Soviet push to develop Siberia's mineral resources, it grew rapidly as a coal-mining and logistics hub. The city sits in a valley between the Stanovoy and Yablonovy mountain ranges at an elevation of about 900 metres, giving it a milder climate than Yakutsk — winter lows around −40°C, summer highs reaching 25°C.
Neryungri's economy centres on coal extraction from the nearby Chulman and Neryungri deposits, with several large mining operations employing much of the workforce. The city also serves as the southern gateway to Yakutia — most overland travellers entering the republic from the Russian rail network pass through Neryungri.
For visitors, Neryungri is primarily a transit point, but it gives a look of Soviet-era Siberian industrial life, surrounding mountain scenery, and access to hiking and fishing in the Stanovoy Range.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By train
Neryungri is a major station on both the BAM and AYaM railways. Regular trains connect to Moscow (roughly 5–6 days), Khabarovsk, and Vladivostok. The station also serves as the transfer point for onward travel to Yakutsk via the AYaM line. Trains from Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk also stop here.
By plane
Neryungri Chulman Airport (NER) receives flights from Moscow, Khabarovsk, and Yakutsk. The airport is located about 30 km from the city centre.
By road
The federal highway from Yakutsk (R504) passes through Neryungri, connecting it to the wider road network. The drive from Yakutsk takes approximately 20–24 hours in good conditions.
The city centre is easy to cover on foot. Buses connect residential districts to the station and industrial zones. Taxis are inexpensive. For trips into the surrounding mountains or to nearby villages, a hired vehicle or organised tour is the practical option.
What are the things to do?
The Neryungri Regional Museum covers local mining history, regional natural history, and Yakut and Evenki cultural exhibits. The surrounding Stanovoy Range offers mountain hiking with views over taiga forests and river valleys. In summer, fishing on the Tynda and Neryungri Rivers is popular with locals.
Activities and experiences include guided tours, outdoor excursions, and seasonal events specific to this destination. Local outfitters can arrange tailored experiences based on the time of year and visitor interests.

The Hotel Neryungri and several smaller guesthouses offer basic accommodation. Booking is not usually necessary outside peak travel periods, but options are limited — travellers with specific needs should arrange in advance.
What should you buy?
The city centre market offers basic provisions, local produce, and some traditional crafts. Neryungri is not a significant shopping destination — most visitors stock up in Yakutsk or Khabarovsk before arriving.
Where to go next?
Most travellers pass through Neryungri en route to Yakutsk (by AYaM railway, roughly 36 hours) or continue south on the BAM to Khabarovsk. The nearby town of Aldan (by road or rail) offers gold-mining heritage and access to the eastern taiga.
