Why visit Nyurba?

Nyurba is a small town of roughly 10,000 people in the western part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), situated on the Vilyuy River. It serves as the administrative centre of the Nyurbinsky District and is one of the cultural heartlands of the Vilyuy Yakut — a subgroup of the Sakha people with distinct dialect and traditions centred on the Vilyuy River basin.

Founded in the 17th century as a trading post, Nyurba grew around the fur trade and later developed as an agricultural and administrative centre. The surrounding area supports cattle breeding, horse herding, and some gold mining. The town retains a strong Yakut cultural identity, with traditional practices maintained more visibly than in larger cities.

For travellers, Nyurba offers an opportunity to experience rural Yakut life and Vilyuy Yakut culture away from the more tourist-oriented capital. The Vilyuy River landscape and taiga surroundings provide a peaceful setting.
