Why visit Mirny?
Mirny is a remote mining town of 34,000 residents in western Sakha Republic (Yakutia), East Siberia. Established in 1955 after Soviet geologists discovered the Mir kimberlite pipe, the settlement grew specifically to extract diamonds from the frozen Siberian wilderness. The town is headquarters to ALROSA, Russia’s state-owned diamond mining company, which produces roughly a quarter of the world's raw diamonds.
The town's defining feature is the inactive Mir open-pit mine, an artificial crater measuring 1.2 km across and 525 meters deep. While open-pit excavation ended in 2004, underground mining operations continue in the region. Travelers visit Mirny primarily to stand at the edge of this industrial crater, visit geology museums dedicated to Siberian diamond mining, and experience life in an isolated subarctic monocity.
Mirny has an extreme subarctic climate (Köppen Dfc). Winters last seven months from October through April, with average January temperatures around −35°C (−31°F) and lows reaching −50°C (−58°F). Summers are short, lasting from late June to August, with average July highs around 23°C (73°F).

By Air
Mirny Airport (MJZ) sits 4 km east of the city center. Alrosa Air Company operates regular domestic flights connecting Mirny to Moscow Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO) (6 hours), Novosibirsk (OVB, 3.5 hours), Irkutsk (IKT, 2.5 hours), and Yakutsk (YKS, 1.5 hours). S7 Airlines and Yakutia Airlines also operate flights from Novosibirsk and Yakutsk. Taxis to the town center cost 200–350 RUB ($2.20–3.90 USD), while municipal bus #1 costs 35 RUB ($0.40 USD).
By Train
No train service. Mirny has no railway connection. The nearest passenger rail terminal is Nizhny Bestyakh near Yakutsk, over 1,100 km east on the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline (operated by Russian Railways / Passenger Company of Yakutia).
By Car
Federal Highway A331 "Vilyuy" links Mirny to Lensk (230 km south, 3.5–5 hours driving) and Yakutsk (1,150 km east, 24–30 hours driving). The route consists mostly of unpaved gravel and earth. River crossings over the Vilyuy and Lena rivers require seasonal ferries from June to October and ice roads (zimnik) from December to April. Road travel stops during the May spring thaw.
By Bus
No scheduled long-distance intercity buses connect Mirny to major Russian cities outside Sakha. Shared minibuses (marshrutkas) run by private operators handle regional routes. Minibuses to Lensk depart daily (230 km, 4 hours, 2,000–3,000 RUB / $22–33 USD per seat). Minibuses to Udachny operate several times weekly (530 km, 8–10 hours, 4,000–6,000 RUB / $44–67 USD per seat).
Municipal buses (routes #1, #2, and #3) operate along main streets between residential quarters, the mining district, and the airport for 35 RUB ($0.40 USD) per ride.
Taxis are available through ride-hailing apps Yandex Go and Maxim, or local taxi operators like Taksi Voskhod (+7 41136 2-00-00). Standard rides within town boundaries cost 150–300 RUB ($1.70–3.30 USD).
