Chersky

Saha, Respublika, Russia

Why visit Chersky?

Chersky is a small settlement of roughly 2,000 people on the Kolyma River in the northeastern Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Founded in the 1930s as a gold-mining camp, it is best known today as the site of the Northeast Science Station (NSS) — one of the world's leading permafrost and climate change research facilities, operated by the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in collaboration with Russian scientists.

The settlement sits in the Kolyma River floodplain at approximately 68°N latitude, surrounded by permafrost taiga and tundra. The Kolyma Highway ("Road of Bones"), one of Russia's most infamous roads built by Gulag prisoners, passes through the region, connecting Chersky to Magadan and Yakutsk.

For travellers, Chersky is a destination for those interested in climate science, permafrost research, and the extreme northeast of Siberia. The research station occasionally hosts visiting scientists and the surrounding Kolyma landscape offers stark Arctic beauty.

How do you get there?

By air

Chersky has a small airfield with irregular flights from Yakutsk (roughly 2,000 km northeast). Flights are infrequent and weather-dependent.

By road

The Kolyma Highway connects Chersky to Magadan (roughly 1,500 km south) and to Yakutsk via winter roads. Summer road travel is extremely difficult due to permafrost thaws and river crossings.

The settlement is tiny and walkable. Vehicles and river boats provide access to the surrounding area.

What are the things to do?

The Northeast Science Station offers tours explaining permafrost research and Arctic climate science. The Kolyma River landscape and surrounding taiga provide opportunities for nature observation. The "Road of Bones" itself is a point of historical interest, though travel on it requires serious preparation.

Activities and experiences include guided tours, outdoor excursions, and seasonal events specific to this destination. Local outfitters can arrange tailored experiences based on the time of year and visitor interests.
