Why visit Aldan?
Aldan is a gold-mining town of roughly 20,000 people in the eastern part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), situated on the Aldan River — a major tributary of the Lena. Founded in 1924 during the Soviet gold rush, the town grew rapidly as alluvial and hard-rock gold deposits were exploited in the surrounding hills. Aldan sits at approximately 650 metres elevation in a landscape of taiga-covered plateaus and river valleys.
The Aldan goldfield was one of the most productive in the Soviet Union, and gold mining remains the town's economic backbone. The surrounding region is also home to Evenki reindeer herders and Yakut cattle breeders who maintain traditional livelihoods alongside the mining economy.
For travellers, Aldan serves as a base for exploring the eastern taiga and as a transit point on the road from Neryungri to Yakutsk. The town's mining heritage, river setting, and access to wilderness areas make it a worthwhile stop on a Yakutia circuit.
