Hunedoara County lies in western Transylvania and holds several of Romania's most significant heritage sites. Corvin Castle in Hunedoara city, a Gothic-Renaissance fortress that became the residence of Transylvanian voivode Iancu de Hunedoara, is one of Europe's largest castles. The county also holds the UNESCO World Heritage Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa Regia, the pre-Roman capital of the Dacian kingdom, and the ruins of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the first Roman capital of the province of Dacia. To the south, Retezat National Park protects a glacial-lake landscape with over 80 lakes and alpine meadows.
