Brad

Hunedoara, Romania

Why visit Brad?

Brad is a city of about 12,700 people (2021) in Hunedoara County, Transylvania, situated at 278 m altitude at the foot of the Metaliferi Mountains. Its name means "fir tree" in Romanian. Mining in the area is documented as early as 21 BC, and Brad was a major centre for gold extraction, with its mines operating until 2006. First mentioned in 1445, the city grew around its mining industry. Today Brad preserves its mining heritage in a notable Gold Museum and is a gateway to the Apuseni Mountains.
