Why visit Calan?

Călan (Hungarian: Pusztakalán) is a town of about 10,000 people (2021) in Hunedoara County, Transylvania, situated in the Strei River valley at 230 m altitude. It administers twelve villages, including the historically important settlements of Strei and Streisângeorgiu, which contain some of Romania's oldest medieval churches. Known since Roman times as the thermal resort Aquae, Călan developed around its steel works (now closed) in the modern era. The town is a convenient base for exploring the Țara Hațegului (Hațeg Country) region, a land of medieval churches, dinosaur fossils, and stunning mountain scenery.
