Nanawa

Presidente Hayes, Paraguay

Why visit Nanawa?

Nanawa is a district in Presidente Hayes department, in the Paraguayan Chaco, established as a Paraguayan military outpost in 1928. It became internationally significant during the Chaco War with Bolivia: the First Battle of Nanawa (20–26 January 1933) saw Bolivian forces under German WWI veteran Hans Kundt fail to take the heavily fortified Paraguayan stronghold, and the Second Battle of Nanawa (4–9 July 1933) — sometimes called the "South American Verdun" for its trench-warfare intensity and casualties — was a decisive Paraguayan victory that shifted the war's momentum away from Bolivia. Today it is a small settlement in the Chaco lowlands.
