Presidente Hayes, Paraguay
Why visit Benjamin Aceval?
Benjamín Aceval is a district and town in Presidente Hayes department, in the Paraguayan Chaco about 42 km north of Asunción. It was originally settled by foreigners who came from Nueva Burdeos (present-day Villa Hayes) and called the place Monte Sociedad; the district itself was created by law in 1940. It is named for Benjamín Aceval, the Paraguayan diplomat who carried the documents to U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes for the arbitration that awarded the Chaco Boreal to Paraguay after the War of the Triple Alliance. With around 22,000 residents (2022 census), it is the most agriculturally active district in Presidente Hayes, known for extensive sugarcane cultivation and home to the only sugar mill in the Chaco.
