Villa Oliva

Ñeembucú, Paraguay

Why visit Villa Oliva?

Villa Oliva is a town in northern Ñeembucú department, on the Paraguay River about 120 km south of Asunción. It was founded on April 1, 1845 by Father Fidel Maíz during the government of Carlos Antonio López. Originally called Myrindy, it was renamed the same year in honor of Ana Corvalán de Oliva, its first settler, on whose land the town was laid out. The surrounding flat, well-watered grasslands became a ranching area, developing further from around 1960 when a dirt road first opened access to the town. The district's population is around 4,000. The climate is subtropical; best visited during the dry season (May–September).
